Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Left Out
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has named captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in the summer.
Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery following the summer tour.
Leinster forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "cover".
After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again compete for the starting number 10 position. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third fly-half selected as the coach deciding not to selecting the province's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test wins over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of Leinster's URC league matches this season and featured in the second string's loss by England in the English city previously.
McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a cap.
Munster lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions matches during the tour, is poised to cover for the captain should the captain does not regain full fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The national team will meet in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
