Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and impeding a legislative process.

The former director's lawyer submitted the answer representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

His attorney declared he would attempt to have the proceedings terminated for several causes including that his defendant, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted shortly after Donald Trump pressured his attorney general to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald advised the judge they intended to submit multiple legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a court case, stating the government's case was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully appointed to assume control of the case.

James Comey's proceedings was first overseen by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under influence from Trump after his examination into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his wife, his wife and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.

Upon hearing to the magistrate state his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the judge.

Previous Events

The former director was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about a few months into Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Russia and Trump's campaign.

While in office, Mr Comey caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to criticism from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors allege the former director provided false information to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not authorized an individual at the agency to leak to media organizations information about the government examinations.

Prosecutors also allege the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and impede" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Public Statements

Through a recording James Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he said he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "tyrant".

"Our household have been aware for years that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The accusations against James Comey emerged after Trump published on digital channels demanding his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute the former director and additional individuals.
