The Year 2026 Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been far from new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. Yet, their prevalence has markedly increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the broader culture is somewhat apparent elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the trend in gaming looks especially strong.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.
Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
