British Foreign Office has included an additional eleven further nations to its travel alert list regarding the dangers of toxic alcohol poisoning from adulterated spirits.

This revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a global increase in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Only recently, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, after multiple notable events like the deadly demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even tiny quantities of methanol can lead to vision loss or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful substance commonly used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for human consumption.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the refining procedure.

However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to identify.

Official Advice for Travelers

Authorities official a senior official stated that all travellers should be aware of the symptoms of methanol contamination.

"If you're drinking spirits abroad, stick to reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or free shots," the minister warned.

"Should anything appears suspicious, such as a headache that's far more intense than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention immediately."

The complete register of destinations noted as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
